Enhancing Patient & Staff Experiences at CHOP Cardiology

UX Physical Design, 2023
CHOP Logo IMG.png

The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) is the nation's first hospital devoted exclusively to the care of children. The hospital's mission is to provide children with the highest quality and most advanced care, delivered with compassion, integrity, and respect. While CHOP benefits the community, it also relies on community support.

Recently, CHOP Cardiology department’s moving to a new place in the Buerger Center has led to inconvenience due to poor wayfinding and patient tracking. The temporary solutions of signage and navigation are ineffective and confusing. The early wayfinding design mainly focused on the graphic design but ignored the interaction and special needs for the users. Additionally, patient tracking needs to be enhanced to ensure that staff and patients know their status and location within the facility.

How might we...

navigate patients and staff to be
in the right place at the right time?

The challenge...

To design a comprehensive wayfinding system that addresses the issues with the current temporary signage and navigation while also improving patient tracking and communication to create a more efficient and user-friendly experience for all involved

Observation in Cardiology department
Where am I supposed to wait?

Which location may I use? This isolation room is waiting place?
The lack of clear and specific indicators makes it difficult to distinguish between the waiting areas.

 Waiting Area Confusion

Short-term

Where’s the Check Out?

Where’s the blue hallway & Room 58?
The constantly growing nature of CHOP can lead to temporary signage that is poorly designed and only serves as a label of the location, failing to effectively guide directions.

Short-term

Where’s the Check Out?

Where’s the blue hallway & Room 58?
Lack of up-to-date information about the status and location of patients leads to a breakdown in communication which causes the delays in patient visits.
