Evocative Space No.1

date. 2018

acrylic 65cm x 40cm x 15cm

Home is always a special place. In this project, I reinterpreted a Chinese restaurant as sculpture. Chinese food is such an exciting thing - you can find it anywhere in the world. It always reminds me of home, even though ironically, it never tastes like home. Memories of my hometown, Nanjing, have become blurry but I still try to hold on to them. This sculptural work plays with light and shadow to reflect those fuzzy and clear memories; they appear in my mind randomly and disappear as soon as I try to take a closer look. The raffle box on the left reflects my yearning for clarity- when illuminated, only a few specific details can be seen.

Evocative Space No.2

date. 2018

acrylic 41cm x 52cm x 20cm

Evocative Space No. 2 is based on ideas in my previous work, Evocative Space No. 1. Here, I focused more on illustrating the most important artistic and cultural motifs of my hometown. I believe the home exists in the mind forever. In Chinese mythology, the phoenix is an auspicious symbol. Evocative Space No. 2 invites the audience to focus on the objects themselves rather than shadows and lighting. By doing so, the motifs from my hometown and the phoenix 'fly' together in the sky. Additionally, the patterns inscribed on the objects are meant to wish fortune upon the citizens of Nanjing.
